Natural water (groundwater, rivers, lakes, oceans) will always contain silicate but the amount present will depend on the weathering of silicate rocks. The concentration of silicate when analysing stones, sediments, soils and water is usually described in mg/litre of silicon dioxide (SiO₂).
Silicates are basically non-toxic to the organisms in an aquarium. An increased concentration of silicate can, however, lead to the increased algal bloom of diatoms, which utilise silicon dioxide for building their cell walls. Particular attention should therefore be paid to the concentration of silicate when setting up a new aquarium.

As a preventive measure we therefore recommend regularly checking the tap water or the treated water using the new Tropic Marin Silicate Test.

The new Tropic Marin® Comparator makes reading off the results on the tiered scale easy and reliable. The tiered scale on the coloured card indicates results of <0.05 ppm, 0.1 ppm, 0.25 ppm, 0.5 ppm, 1.0 ppm, and 2.0 ppm.

For the first time it is possible to check the test reagents for function and shelf life by applying the silicate standard enclosed. So you may rest assured that the results determined are accurate.
