Who is Balling?
Hans-Werner Balling was born in March 1965 and grew up in Heending (Lower Franconia).
​
From 1981 to 1983 he trained as a technical assistant for natural history museums
and research institutes in the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt am Main. The training took place under
among other things in the sections of ichthyology with the well-known ichthyologist Wolfgang Klausewitz. here
was his first contact with marine aquaristics.
After military service and working at the Mineralogical-Petrographical Institute of the University of Munich, he moved to the Jura-Museum Eichstätt in 1987 and was in charge of the aquariums there. In addition to a few freshwater aquariums, the seawater aquariums with tank volumes of 1,000 l, 1,500 l and 5,000 l were looked after. In addition, two reef aquariums with corals, each with a volume of 800 l, were rebuilt, and the transformation of the large coral fish tank with 5,000 l into a reef aquarium was carried out.

After the first Acropora corals appeared on the market in the early 1990s, he developed what is now known as the "Balling Method" for aquariums, which is based on the supply of calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and avoiding ion shifting with sodium chloride-free sea salt. In 1994 this was published in the magazine DATZ.

In 2001 he switched toTropic Marine®(Dr. Biener GmbH) to Wartenberg/Hesse and since then he has worked there as a product developer in chemical and aquarium laboratories. A large part of the product portfolio ofTropic Marine®are new developments by Hans-Werner Balling.
